"can i offer you something to drink?
a hot beverage perhaps?"
i ask with probably a bit
too much eagerness..
"yes, i think i will,
a cuppa tea, please?"
"just a glass of water for me, please!"
two three more call out their orders
and i am pleased
to deliver.
i know it may seem small,
preparing and delivering
custom cup orders
but to me
it's big.
offering a hot drink
to those who
fill in the cracks of my couches
and indent my chairs
with their wind rattled frames..
they have ridden bikes,
walked a mile or two,
found their way to my door
in the dark
in hopes to find rest,
warmth, and
fellowship.
by His grace and gentle command,
my heart is to give
exactly that for all
those who enter our home.
offering a drink means more than
quenching thirsty travelers
it means
please, stay a while.
please, relax, make yourself comfortable.
please,
make yourself at home.
grabbing mugs,
pulling out spoons,
putting on the kettle,
assembling saucers,
sugar cubes,
and milk jugs
preparing the tray
yes, it may seem small..
insignificant really.
i mean c'mon,
pouring a cuppa tea?
anyone
could do that.
i know that.
they could say no too, and i could
allow myself
to take it as personal rejection.
but it is meant to be
a gift.
a free, unconditional one.
for me,
it is lifting another above myself,
taking the form of
servant
and doing so with
gladness
and love.
i know it's small,
but it's a start to
servantship
and that's where my heart is.
by His grace alone,
i have learned first from
the Greatest
Servant of all.
"not so with you..Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.."
-matthew 20.26
