Trendy Whipped Coffee

I have been watching this trend of the aesthetically pleasing whipped coffee or otherwise known as dalgona coffee sweep the internet world by storm. It is a golden dark brown whipped cream looking topping, silky and smooth, and lusturuis atop a glass of iced milk. I tried it quickly after seeing it start to pop up more than once on Tic Toc, but I failed at it the first time because I used ground coffee beans.  The original recipe floating around somewhere, calls for instant coffee granules, but I didn't realize it had to be so specific.
The second attempt I was very excited because I remembered I had a canister of Cafe Du Monde, the good stuff from New Orleans, and I thought maybe it would work with that as the coffee grounds were fine and bold, and I wasn't sure if it was instant or not, but I thought I would give it a try. I ended up just making a mess trying to use my immersion blender in a shallow bowl, coffee grounds and wet muddy liquid flew all over the counter and the coffee did not whip one bit.
I don't know why I didn't just give up there. Pictures and videos continued to pop up in my feed and though the methods varied a little bit here and there, the ingredients stayed the same. i needed instant coffee granules. No other substitute would work. I also saw someone else making it and they used their whisk attachment that can replace the immersion blender and they were able to create the whip in a fraction of the time it would take someone to whisk it by hand to get those beautiful silky peaks.
I was determined to try one more time with all the correct components.

I (finally got my hands on) a small jar of instant coffee, white sugar, hot water, and an electric whisk. Low and behold, I had success! A beautiful luscious cream began to emerge quickly after i started to whisk. It grew fluffier in color and ended up a silky light brown color.

I poured it over ice and milk, and it was delicious. Even more so this time because I finally made it correctly!

I decided from then on when I make it, I wanted to try a slightly healthier option. After all, two teaspoons of sugar can add up.. I make it using one truvia packet because that is sweet enough for me, and it is sugar free!

For my milk, I use unsweetened vanilla almond milk to keep it dairy free, and that helps with calories too.

I can share with you how I do it, but I'm only just another added voice in the throng of whipped coffee makers! Have a go at it, yourself, and see how you like it!

This version is sugar free, dairy free, gluten free, all the frees!

you'll need:

2 teaspoons of instant coffee-it has to be instant, so it can dissolve well!
1-2 truvia packets, depending on how sweet you like it
2 teaspoons hot water
a deep bowl or container
an electric whisk or immersion blender
a glass
unsweetened vanilla almond milk-or your milk of choice
ice

In a bowl, drop in instant coffee, trivia, and hot water.
Begin to whisk. It should take about 2-3 minutes to get that silky creamy consistency. You want it a little thicker and to stick to the whisk, not being too drippy. You can eyeball to your preference.

In a glass, fill with ice and almond milk.

Top with golden crema and dollop it all over the top.

Enjoy with a straw or straight up with your mouth.
