good byes are the worst

we pulled up along the curb
airplanes flying overhead
she got out slowly
[an entire week of glorious nonstop grandchildren]
she hugged the little squirmy one
somehow they both sensed a loss
was about to take place
and the boy,
his eyes welled up with unshed tears
and my heart broke
my eyes couldn't help but match his.
Grandma hugged him tight
his little arms clung to her sun kissed neck
so reluctant to let go
lots of tender tears
threatening to fall
I knew I was witnessing
a very grown up emotion in my
4 year old boy.
sweet sadness that welled up in him
he loved her and cherished the time he was able to have
and all of the sudden
just like that
it was time to say goodbye.
so bittersweet.
she hugged her grown up son
as the van door slowly shut
my own son heaved a sigh
I held his hand as he let out the full sadness
he tried so bravely to keep in check.
my heart choked
his tiny frame shook with quiet sobs
but I knew life was happening
at that
very
moment.

Oh what a sweet spirit. I hate it when you see the painful side of growing up and understanding. I wish we could protect them from anything that hurts. So touching, Jana. Thanks for sharing. :-)

I am sure you can relate so well. It's good gritty stuff, but hard to witness sometimes. Thank you for your continued support, Lindsy!

aren't they though? I love the airport for departing and picking up loved ones and travel and adventure, but the goodbyes seem much more signifcant and weighty for some reason..glad you agree, Leslie.
