some while back, our good friends Philip and Shaina introduced us to this historically classic cocktail one evening when they dined over at our place for dinner. Philip is the king of all things gentlemanly, classy, and debonair[think Mad Men meets j.crew meets Bert from Mary Poppins], and I asked him to be in charge of the sipping department. He has never let us down. Him and Shaina arrived with two gorgeous authentic copper mugs, along with the makings for a Moscow mule and after drinking from the cup, i understand fully why he insisted the drink HAD to be drank from the copper. You just don't get the full effect otherwise...crisp, refreshing, cold, delicious summer [anytime really] beverage. Nathan and i fell in love with the drink. After that evening, I couldn't stop thinking about it. It wasn't just a drink, it was an experience, I could only wish and dream for some copper mugs of my own...
Well, along comes our 7th anniversary [yay. we made it this far:)] and wouldn't you know it, my ever thoughtful husband who is so keenly aware of both social etiquette [to a T oftentimes] as well as just being his usual romantic self, followed the traditional gift giving for anniversaries-year 7? wool and copper. BaZing!! Amidst empty plates of tapas and glasses of sparkling white wine, I opened a big beautiful forest green box [one of my favorite colors] to discover a set of 4 copper mugs nestled in among white tissue paper. Ah, bliss. Was I ever excited!!!
I immediately went out the next day to pick up some ginger beer. World Market has a great Australian made ginger beer, called Bundaberg, but we are open to trying different beers just to experiment with taste. Bundaberg, in our opinion, is a great start. Without further drag, i will step aside and leave instructions for you to give it a try yourself. enjoy, won't you?
cheers.
you'll need:
1 copper mug
1 oz vodka
1-2 fresh mint leaves
1 bottle of ginger beer [i use Bundaberg]
ice
fresh squeezed lime
In copper mug, pour in one ounce of vodka [your preferred choice.] Tear 2 mint leaves and muddle a bit with vodka. Add ice. Top with ginger beer. A fresh squeeze of lime, and you are just about golden. or should i say, lucky as a copper penny? I like to garnish my drink with an extra mint leaf and a circled slice of lime. sip and enjoy.
